The News

Why is my heart breaking?

I hear the news on waking

broken babies, hungry children,

chilled by killing cold and filthy, midden

like rivers flushing toxins harmfully in our seas.

Hitler rising from the grave,

to bludgeon and break in waves

on those who come for shelter too,

friends and good people trembling so,

fearful now, troubled hide behind their doors.

My loved ones now at risk,

as volatile people whisk

up the crowds, vilify the innocent.

Good folks locked in for their good intent

announcing fossil fuel’s vile killing content.

Why is my heart so low?

To stay the evil power, how

in a world that thinks no more

of compassion, icy, cold heartedly,

chillingly blindly, against the common good.

Take heart my child,

for I have been there.

They pilloried me for speaking,

their own people greedily betraying.

Praying, I died for your future and hope.

My prayers are still interceding

intervening with love and meaning

but they’re free to choose the worst

continually breaking my heart, as yours.

like water seeks its own level evil will sink

in the squalid swamp of its own creating.
