The wise man asked,
Who do you seek?
“God,” we said.
—
Tell me about your God,” he said.
—
The voices crowded in:
God is big so big the Universe is not big enough for him,
He likes it when we listen,
God wants us to be wealthy.
The good to be healthy.
The righteous to be saved.
Those who deserve enslaved.
He hates gays, hates fights.
She believes in Human Rights.
Wants us to live in peace,
and make all wars cease.
God is powerful and we sin,.
Need to confess before let in.
We are the ones with the truth.
He uses words like thee and forsooth.
He answers prayers when said right
and fit in with his just ways..
—
The wise man leaned forward,
The tears in his eyes glistened.
Keep looking,” he said.
“You will find that God
and he will fit the image you
have made for yourself.”
—-
“Well, what is your God like?” they cried.
—-
The God I seek does not fit into tick boxes,
moves as silently as the wind,
pours love into the world
and weeps over divisions,
children abused and oppression.
Loves without thought or reason.
Loves without boundaries, no condemnation.
Will never fail us.
Has no gender. God is.
God will rather die for you and me.
—-
I will see God in the clouds furious on the horizon,
in the moonlit stars, the golden dawn,
the lifting waves, the twilight twittering of birds,
the child’s chuckle devoted couples
of all hues and sexuality,
the smile on a dandelion,
the crawling ant and the buzzing bee,
the tears of grief and joy of birth and death,
the cry of the wolf or roar of a lion –
—
God is here and now,
Be still,
open your mind
and let love in.
